Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomes Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at al-Ittihadiya Palace - Presidency
CAIRO - 15 February 2024: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Thursday in a visit that marks 100 years of diplomatic relations between both countries.
In their Cairo meeting, Sisi and Lula will discuss the special Egyptian-Brazilin relations and their joint coordination in international events and forums.
Lula's visit to Egypt, his first as president, gains special significance as Egypt is now a member of the BRICS bloc, co-founded by Brazil.
Egypt aims to boost investments and trade with states of the bloc and encourage the use of local currency in trade among them amid a foreign currency shortage that the country has been facing over the past two years.
Lula's visit to Egypt is also taking place shortly after Brazil has invited Egypt to attend the G20 meetings during Brazil's presidency of the group.
